How Do US Freelancers Pay Quarterly Estimated Taxes?

20 July 2026

1040-ES due dates, the $1,000 threshold, safe harbor, and a case habit that keeps quarters from slipping.

W-2 jobs withhold. Freelancer income usually does not. The IRS still wants pay-as-you-go. That is what estimated tax is for: income tax plus self-employment tax, spread across four payment periods.

When you generally must pay

Per the IRS estimated taxes page, if you expect to owe at least $1,000 after withholding and credits, you generally need estimated payments. Sole proprietors, partners, and S corporation shareholders typically figure them with Form 1040-ES.

Underpayment by a period due date can trigger a penalty even if you later get a refund when you file.

2026 payment due dates

From the 2026 Form 1040-ES package:

| Income period | Due date | | --- | --- | | Jan 1 – Mar 31 | April 15, 2026 | | Apr 1 – May 31 | June 15, 2026 | | Jun 1 – Aug 31 | September 15, 2026 | | Sep 1 – Dec 31 | January 15, 2027 |

If a due date falls on a weekend or legal holiday, the next business day counts. You can skip the January 15 payment if you file the prior-year return and pay the full balance by the early-February date printed in that year’s 1040-ES instructions.

How much to send

Common approaches (details in Publication 505 and the 1040-ES worksheet):

  • Pay enough so you hit safe harbor: generally 100% of last year’s total tax (110% if prior-year AGI was over $150,000), or
  • Aim for 90% of this year’s tax, paid across the periods.

Self-employment tax sits inside the estimate. The 1040-ES worksheets walk through Schedule C-style net earnings and the SE deduction. Recalculate mid-year if income spikes or dies.

A freelancer habit that sticks

  1. Open a dedicated tax savings pocket. Move a percentage of every client payment the day it clears.
  2. Put all four due dates on a calendar the week you file last year’s return.
  3. Pay via IRS Direct Pay or EFTPS and save the confirmation number next to the case for that quarter.
  4. If your state has estimated tax, calendar those dates too. Federal and state are separate piles.

Bureauzilla treats each quarter as a case with a deadline and a payment receipt attachment. The product reminds. You stamp the pay.
