What If My Krankenkasse Demands the Maximum Contribution?
Missing Steuerbescheid, Höchstbeitrag pressure, and a calm evidence reply.
Common letter shock: We set your Beitrag at the maximum because we lack your Einkommensteuerbescheid. Forums fill with panic. The process is usually mechanical.
Why funds do this
Freiwillig versicherte Selbstständige are assessed on income. Without a timely Steuerbescheid (or accepted substitute), many Krankenkassen escalate to the Höchstbeitrag based on the Beitragsbemessungsgrenze. AOK publicly warns that missing the multi-year submission window triggers maximum contribution logic.
This is a document gap problem first. Treat it like a Finanzamt Nachfrage: deadline, Aktenzeichen/Mitgliedsnummer, requested proof.
Response sequence
- Confirm the period they are closing (which calendar year).
- Locate the Einkommensteuerbescheid for that year (ELSTER download or Steuerberater copy).
- If the Bescheid does not exist yet, get written proof from the Finanzamt or your advisor that assessment is pending; ask the KK how they want that documented.
- Upload or mail within their deadline; keep a send receipt.
- Ask in one sentence for recalculation and written confirmation of the new Beitrag.
Do not argue philosophy in the first reply. Attach the PDF. Philosophy can wait for a Widerspruch if numbers still disagree after evidence.
After recalculation
Expect a revised Bescheid: Erstattung, Nachzahlung, or monthly adjustment. Put any Nachzahlung on a payment plan conversation early if cash is tight. AOK notes installment plans for arrears, not for routine monthly Beitrag, so ask specifically what they offer.
Prevention
When your annual Steuerbescheid arrives, forward a copy to the Krankenkasse the same week. Tag a recurring task: "KK + Steuerbescheid YYYY." Bureauzilla-style case trails help when the fund claims they "never received" something you already sent.
